Britt Andreatta
Director of First-Year Programs & Leadership Education

Hi there! I am the Mentor/Advisor for all freshmen and I strongly believe that all students should be having a positive experience, academically and socially, so I work to help students make their first year the best it can be. My duties include teaching INT 20 (UCSB’s University Success Course), supporting freshmen in their success, and coordinating several of the campus’ leadership programs. I’m also an alum and came to UCSB as an out-of-state student. My personal life includes hanging out with my partner, Chris, and our pets -- 2 cats named Misty & Tuscany, and a beta fish named Metro. I sing in a band, surf, and also like to read, watch movies, do yoga, and eat pretty much any dessert on the planet. mailto:Britt.andreatta@sa.ucsb.edu

Katya Armistead
Coordinator, Visitor Center

Hello. I enjoy working with prospective students and their families, as well as currently enrolled students. Some of the things that I am involved with on campus include advising the Black Student Union (BSU) and being one of the sophomore class mentors. Outside of UCSB I am a mother of two boys, 13 & 9, I play and coach soccer, and I am on the Board of Directors for the Red Cross. I look forward to meeting you all and hearing about your interests. Katya.armistead@sa.ucsb.edu

Faith Buchanan
Assistant Director of First-Year Programs & Leadership Education

Welcome! My name is Faith Buchanan and I’m the Assistant Director for First-Year Programs and Leadership Education. I’m also doing a M.A. in Counseling Psychology, which relates to my main interests: academics and hearing peoples’ stories. I have a wide variety of other interests including hiking, eating chocolate, watching movies, and salsa dancing. I know that you’re all busy making this transition to university life, but I wanted to welcome you to UCSB and I look forward to meeting all of you! Faith.buchanan@sa.ucsb.edu

Carolyn Buford
Associate Dean of Students

Welcome! I am very excited to be involved with this Women’s Program and look forward to meeting as many of you as I can. A bit about me: I am an Associate Dean of Students and get to work with students on a variety of issues. I am interested in, and dedicated to, helping improve the quality of the student experience in any way that I can. I also have developed a focus on leadership and can help you explore your own leadership abilities and the opportunities here at UCSB for leadership involvement and growth. Along with Britt Andreatta, I teach a course on leadership (ED 173) that is a requirement for the Leadership Certificate Program. I am quite passionate about higher education and believe in building a welcoming and inclusive campus. Outside of UCSB, I have two daughters with whom I have a very strong relationship. I have enjoyed watching them grow into young women who are finding their own way in the world. Carolyn.buford@sa.ucsb.edu

Regina Fletcher
Academic Advisor & Honors Coordinator, College of Letters & Science

As an academic advisor, I serve as a guide to the countless resources you have for academic choices, including majors and minors, study abroad, the honors program, and research opportunities. I value the discovery process that lies ahead for you and am here to support you as you enter into campus life. You'll soon learn how accessible all of us are and how much we want you to find your niche at UCSB. I love spending time with family and friends, hiking and beach walking, watching volleyball, and reading. rfletcher@ltsc.ucsb.edu

Judy Guillermo-Newton
Campus Ombuds

Hi and welcome to UCSB! You are probably wondering "What in the world is an Ombuds?" The Office of the Ombuds offers confidential and informal conflict resolution to the campus, so we listen impartially and help folks brainstorm and problem solve. Among lots of other things, I especially love to play tennis, read, play games, and hang out with my two snorting Pugs. I have two daughters who graduated from Cal and the University of Puget Sound in recent years. judy.guillermo@ombuds.ucsb.edu

Sharon Hoshida
Program Director, Women’s Center

Greetings! I am always open to new ideas for speakers, performance artists, writers, filmmakers, and others to bring to our campus. You will always find my door open if you would like to drop by and give me some suggestions. We strive to give voice to the underrepresented in our programs as well as in our offerings as a resource center here on campus. In my life off campus, I am very active in the progressive, feminist political arena. I serve on the board of the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee, the work group for the Women’s Economic Justice Project, the steering committee for the Women’s Literary Festival, and I serve on committees with such community groups as Planned Parenthood and the Fund for Santa Barbara. I am also active in the local peace movement and am a member of CODEPINK and Amnesty International. I look forward to meeting each of you, and can’t wait to hear what you have to say about what’s important to you! Sharon.hoshida@sa.ucsb.edu

Tania Israel
Assistant Professor in Counseling, Clinical and School Psychology

Welcome to UCSB! I have been here since 2000 as a faculty member in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology. When I was in college, I appreciated getting to know faculty outside the classroom setting, and now that I’m a professor, I’m looking forward to connecting with you through informal discussions, workshops, meals, etc. I do a lot of work related to gender, sexuality, and social justice; and I’d love to hear your thoughts on these issues. I’m looking forward to meeting you soon. mailto:tisrael@education.ucsb.edu

Tony Jakubisin
Resident Director, San Nicolas Hall.

Tony attended Boston University and The Ohio State University as an undergraduate, and earned his Master’s degree from Ohio State in 2005. Social justice and multicultural education are passions of his and issues to which he has dedicated his career. Gender, sexuality, and access and retention of students from under-represented groups to higher education are his specializations and research interests. tjakubisin@housing.ucsb.edu

Micael Kemp
Director of Career Services

Welcome to the Women’s Program! I’m look forward to joining you in this new-for-all-of-us experience. I can offer you resources for figuring out your major, connecting to local employers and internship sponsors, and later down the road applying to graduate school or getting that first post-BA job. Whether your passion is wading through swamps researching the mating habits of endangered snails, working to promote women’s basketball, becoming a management trainee for a multinational corporation, or helping the Peace Corp to build wells in remote the San villages of Namibia, I’m here to help you figure out how to follow your heart. Outside of work I spend my time traveling to remote locations in the US and around the world to photograph indigenous rock art (my passion). I love the desert and recently bought 40 acres down a long, twisted, dirt road in Arizona where I hope to spend time writing, doing craft projects, and working on my photography. Micael.kemp@sa.ucsb.edu

Viviana Marsano
Associate Director, MultiCultural Center

¡Bienvenidas a UCSB! At the MCC, I am part of a team that presents educational programs such as lectures, films, panel discussions, workshops, readings, art exhibits, and music dance and dramatic performances on issues pertaining to underrepresented groups, gender, class, sexual orientation and social justice. I occasionally teach an Irish history class. So I can help you out with both your academic life and wellbeing your first year in college. I am originally from Argentina and have been in California and UCSB for 20 years. Outside of work I like to run, hang out with friends and travel, travel and travel. I hope to meet you all soon! marsano-v@sa.ucsb.edu.

Shalauna Miller
Counselor/Peer Program Coordinator, Educational Opportunity Program

A warm welcome to Santa Barbara and UCSB! Currently I work as a Counselor and the Peer Program Coordinator in EOP. I work with students in various ways but mostly I serve as a resource. I’m originally from Colorado but have lived in New Mexico & Kansas as well. Some of my favorite things include reading, travel, hiking, going to the beach, listening to live music and cooking for my friends. I love living in Santa Barbara and taking part in all the town has to offer and am looking forwarding to meeting you and working with you during this exciting time in your life. Shalauna.miller@sa.ucsb.edu

Laury Oaks
Associate Professor, Women’s Studies Program

My undergraduate experience at a large, state university (University of Illinois) makes me sensitive to UCSB students’ feelings. I can offer suggestions to newly arrived students about how to overcome that anonymous feeling in large lectures, participate in section/seminar discussions, and communicate with professors and TAs. Building relationships with professors over your undergraduate years is important, as you will need letters of recommendation for internships, study abroad, jobs, and graduate/professional school. I hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology and Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. I’m a Gaucho Women’s Basketball season ticket holder, and I enjoy seeing Santa Barbara through the eyes of my 3½-year-old daughter, Marissa. oaks@womst.ucsb.edu

Leila Rupp
Professor & Chair, Women’s Studies

Hi, and welcome to UCSB. I came here 4 years ago after teaching for 25 years at Ohio State University, a campus that makes UCSB seem small. But I went to a women’s college, where my entire class was smaller than some of the lectures I teach here, so I know the advantages of both bigness and smallness. I hope you’ll take advantage of the richness of UCSB and also the opportunity to get to know faculty and staff on a personal level. I’m chair of the Women’s Studies program and teach courses about sexuality and women’s movements. One of my favorites is "Sex, Love, and Romance." I love the beach, writing, reading, and exercise, as well as spending time with my partner, Verta, who also teaches here, and my dog, Phoebe (who goes everywhere with me). lrupp@womst.ucsb.edu

Lisa Slavid
Student Leadership Coordinator, Housing & Residential Life

Hi folks! Welcome to UCSB. I’m Lisa Slavid and I advise student leaders in the residence halls, which includes advising RHA (the student government for the residence halls), and I run the HIV/AIDS Safer Sex Peer Program for the residence halls (both of which are great groups you should check out). I’m originally from Massachusetts, but I’ve been in California for 15 years now, and at UCSB for 12! I love it here—I’m into kayaking, photography, ropes courses, art, cross-cultural communications, team-building, and travel—I am a life traveler and I like to hear others’ travel stories too (talk to me about Semester at Sea). I look forward to getting to meet you and to being a resource in any way I can. Welcome to your UCSB adventure! lslavid@housing.ucsb.edu

Jeanne Stanford
Director of Counseling Services

Hi Ladies, I’m really excited to be among the first to welcome you to UC Santa Barbara! Personal/psychological counseling doesn’t have to be scary and I’m hoping to share that with you. Think of me as a consultant. I’m from the east coast and I was born outside of the U.S. (ask when we meet). When I’m not at work, I go to the gym, I try to go to water fitness classes at the Recreation Center, and my most favorite past time is quilting. When you stop by my office you will see two of my quilts. I love to show them off! I’m really pleased to be part of this exciting program and I’m looking forward to meeting you! Jeanne.stanford@sa.ucsb.edu

Chelsea Starkweather
Health Educator, Student Health Service

Hi everyone and welcome to UCSB! I am very excited to get the chance to connect with all of you this year and to offer my resources as a staff member. I specialize in sexual health, running our Dramatic Art classes (including the Summer Theater program you might have seen at Freshmen Orientation), and running a partnership health education program between UCSB and Santa Barbara City College. I graduated from UCSB in 2005 with a major in Sociology and a minor in Education. As a student, I interned at Student Health as a Sex and Relationship Intern, had two very fun summers on Orientation Staff, interned at the Autism Clinic, was part of the Women’s Ensemble Troupe Theater, wrote my Senior Honors Thesis, and traveled abroad with Semester at Sea.
