INTRODUCTION

UCSB is committed to providing a quality learning environment. Faculty, TAs and staff will often be the first to encounter a student who is in distress. Encouraging and helping the student to seek assistance with the appropriate campus and community resources is important. The coordinator of student mental health services, Angela Andrade (893-8920) and assistant coordinator Ryan Sims (893-7318), are readily accessible points of contact for faculty, staff and students who are concerned about a distressed student.

The coordinators of student mental health services will consult about a student, provide referrals to campus departments, develop actions plans, and follow up with students, staff and faculty as appropriate. For mental health concerns, one of the coordinators of student mental health should be contacted. If unavailable for any reason, Social Work Services (893-3087), and/or Counseling Services (893-4411) are also available for consultation. UCSB provides after-hours phone counseling (893-4411) for anyone concerned about a distressed student during weekends, evenings or holidays.

If there is a potential for danger to self or others, Campus Police should be called immediately (9-911 from campus phones).

This Web site provides information that may help in recognizing and responding to students in distress and making appropriate referrals.
