Opportunities for Senior Students
Senior year is much awaited. This is what you have worked so hard for—graduation! Not only is it time to finish your degree, but also time to activate your post graduation plans. Whether you are planning to enter the job market or graduate/professional school, there are a lot of resources at UCSB that can assist you in preparing or implementing your future plans. Being a senior can also be a state of mind. Review the resources below and keep in mind your EOP Counselor can assist you in planning for the future and for leaving UCSB and what that means and feels like for you.
- Graduate and Professional School Day: This fair hosts over 100
graduate, medical, and law programs to recruit UCSB students. To see a list
of who attends and for more fair information, please visit Career
Services.
- Senior progress check. It will let you know where you stand regarding meeting course and residency requirements for graduation. It takes awhile so request it this quarter! www.registrar.ucsb.edu Look under Graduation/Progress Checks.
- Candidacy: Students must declare candidacy for graduation using GOLD no later than the first two weeks of the term during which they plan to graduate. The deadline is published in the Schedule of Classes under "Quarter Deadlines."
- Participation at Commencement: Commencement is held in June for students who received degrees in the preceding December and March, and for those students who are candidates for degrees in June or summer. Seniors who wish to participate in commencement must make a reservation using GOLD.
- Career Fairs: Career Services currently hosts eight fairs during the school year, for everything from On-Campus job opportunities to traveling and interning abroad, Graduate and Professional Schools, and four large career fairs. For a listing of other fairs offered by Career Services, visit http://career.ucsb.edu/students/careerfairs/.
- Career Services: Career Counselors can advise you on the job market or graduate/professional school admissions applications. It is also a place that you can get assistance on your resume of graduate school statement of purpose. Be sure to visit http://career.ucsb.edu/ and complete the registration process for GauchoLink, UCSB's Employment Connection, for access to UCSB's Internship database and for email updates on events and opportunities related to your career interests. Visit Career Services in Building 599 and go to the Learning Resource Room, ask a Peer or Career Counselor for a tour. Don’t leave without picking up the current copy of the Career Manual. It has everything you need to know about resumes, cover letters, etc.
- AS/EOP Grants for Graduate School Application Fees: If you cannot get a fee waiver and you are an EOP and a need based Financial Aid student, you may be eligible for reimbursement of testing and graduate school application fees. Visit EOP in Buildings 406 or 434 or call for an appointment with a Counselor (805) 893-4040 or 893-4292.
- Faculty: Networking with faculty takes your education to a new level. It is also critical for letters of reference for the job market or graduate school admission. Take repeated classes with the same professor, consider enrolling in seminars which have smaller class enrollment, go to office hours or participate in faculty research. If you need a letter of support, give plenty of notice and a resume.
- UCSB Graduate Division: Provides graduate school information and support to prospective and current graduate students. Their workshops such as Preparing for Graduate School Admission or Financing a Graduate Education are relevant to students applying to programs outside of UCSB. Located at 3117 Cheadle Hall, students can drop-in or make appointments with Graduate Outreach and Admissions staff to explore undergraduate research programs, teaching credentials, master's and Ph.D. degrees, and funding opportunities. www.graddiv.ucsb.edu
- Research: Visit the Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities office (2105 North Hall.) Graduate schools and employers look favorably on students who participate in extracurricular activities. www.ltsc.ucsb.edu/urca/index.php
