Black Leadership Retreat

Allison Jackson The Black Leadership Retreat will be held in conjunction with the 8th Annual Office of Student Life Leadership Retreat on September 26-28, 2008.

This fall, nearly 100 student leaders will have the opportunity to participate in an intensive 2 ½ day retreat where they will have the chance to:
  • Develop and enhance their leadership abilities

  • Learn and develop new skills necessary for successful leadership

  • Practice skills with hands-on activities and situations

  • Network with other student leaders and organizations

  • Have a great time at a beautiful mountain retreat site

  • Discuss Black community concerns and pre-plan for upcoming year in break out sessions

Do Black student leaders really need to go? Yes, Black student leaders should go not only to take advantage of this low cost retreat, but also because there will be break-out sessions for the Black community to discuss community concerns and pre-planning for the upcoming year. This is an excellent opportunity to network with other student organizations, too.

Each Black student organization should send 2 people to represent their organization at this retreat and a total of 15 will be selected from the nominees. Priority will be given to executive board members of registered student organizations; however you DO NOT have to be on an executive board to attend the retreat. The person attending must plan to be enrolled at UCSB for the 2008-09 academic year.

Both registered campus organizations and campus departments are eligible to nominate one student representative to attend this amazing event. The goal is to have ALL Black student organizations represented at the retreat. A total of 20 students will be selected from the nominees and submissions. Priority will be given to executive board members of registered student organizations. The person attending must plan to be enrolled at UCSB for the 2008-09 academic year.

The cost is $45/person and includes 6 meals, overnight accommodations, and extensive materials. We will leave UCSB at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and return at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. Payment will only be processed if your group is selected.

*Please make sure that a person from your organization is interested in participating and available for the dates of the Retreat (it’s the weekend after the first day of classes on Sept. 25th). Any organization that is a “no show” will be billed the full cost of $150.

To submit your organization or department for selection, please stop by the Office of Student Life (2260 SRB) and submit a complete application (includes a form of payment, which will be processed only if the organization is selected) the following by Friday, May 30. [DEADLINE EXTENDED THROUGH SUMMER!]

To submit your name for selection, complete submit the following information today:
  1. Black Leadership Retreat application form

  2. Payment, such as personal check, requisition for payment, or dept. account number.

Here’s what last year’s Black Leadership Retreat participants had to say:
“Black leaders bonded and people came out of their shells.”

“I liked meeting new people. I learned more about being a leader on campus, I got to know my friends on a deeper level.”

“Great leaders of the community got a chance to get together and fully express themselves.”

“It was a great networking experience.”

“The food was very good.”

“I did a lot of new things and my confidence has grown.”

“My expectations were exceeded by the [retreat] planners.”

“It would have been ten times better if there was equal representation from all groups in the Black community. This retreat has a lot of power. It’s exactly what our community needs to start the year off right.”
