Diversity at UCSB

Philosophy

The primary focus of EPCA is not to promote one issue or perspective over another, but to provide opportunities for the campus community to learn about and civilly discuss the varied issues and perspectives of individuals and groups with different cultural backgrounds.

We are not looking to promote a "politically correct" perspective. While the term "political correctness" has been used in the past to discount and devalue the efforts of individuals and groups seeking to promote equality for culturally disenfranchised members of the society, it has also been used to stifle and inhibit dialogue around these important issues. The key issue is honest, civil and respectful communication - communication is necessary for building bridges across the barriers created by societal assumptions about race, ethnicity, gender, age, status, class, disabilities, sexual orientation, religion, etc.

Creating a community that supports cultural diversity will enrich the learning process and academic environment by stimulating teaching and research with new perspectives which will potentially generate new questions and new answers to some old problems. In addition, it is crucial that we prepare students to assume leadership positions in the culturally diverse national and global marketplaces. The more informed we all are regarding differing perspectives and lifestyles, the better equipped we are to work in and enjoy the challenges of a diverse society and world.
