About

STEPHEN S. GOODSPEED INTERNSHIP

Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

The Goodspeed Internship was created by the alumni association in honor of Dr. Stephen S. Goodspeed. Dr. Goodspeed was a distinguished Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Vice Chancellor for Administrative Affairs, and professor of Political Science at UCSB. After thirty-two years as a teacher, nearly twenty years of which was also devoted to administrative leadership, Stephen S. Goodspeed retired in 1978, and UC Santa Barbara Alumni dedicated this internship in his honor.

The Goodspeed Internship is designed to give one student each year the opportunity to gain experience in higher education administration while developing organizational and leadership skills. The intern has the unique opportunity to learn about the internal operations of the Division of Student Affairs, from planning and policy-making to the workings of specific units within the division. The Goodspeed intern has the opportunity to collaborate with, and learn from, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and other senior administrators.

Some students have used the internship as a platform to organize various campus events and activities, while others have used it as an opportunity for professional development and/or graduate school planning.

This is a one-year position and the intern must be registered as a student for the entire academic year. The time commitment is 10-15 hours per week (with spring quarter being busiest) with an hourly rate of $16.

Listed below are some of the projects and/or events the intern is responsible for coordinating:

LEADERSHIP

At least twice a year, the Goodspeed intern invites student leaders and top university administrators to meet together to address important campus issues. The format of these meetings varies, but may include roundtable discussions, debates, or large forums. Past participants have included the Chancellor, Executive Vice Chancellor, Dean of Students, the Vice Chancellor, and other faculty and administrators along with students from the Graduate Students Association, Associated Students, registered organizations, etc. Past interns have focused on campus issues in which they took a personal interest.

STUDENT AFFAIRS STUDENT COUNCIL (SASC)

The intern chairs this committee which consists of approximately ten student representatives. The SASC was formed as a resource to gain insight into student needs and to serve as a think tank for ideas on collaboration and efficiency within the Division of Student Affairs. The intern oversees and coordinates the advertising, selection, and coordination of the committee and its meetings.

STUDENT RESOURCE BUILDING GOVERNANCE BOARD

The intern serves as a member of the Student Resource Building (SRB) Governance Board, which typically meets the first Friday of each month. The purpose is to represent the needs and interests of all students in the UCSB community and to address policies governing the Student Resource Building (e.g., image, budget, facilities maintenance, and community areas).

STUDENT AFFAIRS STUDENT STAFF APPRECIATION (SASSA) EVENT

The intern plans and emcees this winter quarter event to honor and recognize the efforts of students staff, both undergraduate and graduate, working within Student Affairs departments.

OMBUDS ADVISORY COMMITTEE
In 2005, Executive Vice Chancellor Gene Lucas re-established the Ombuds Advisory Committee as a resource for the Office of the Ombuds. This committee is also responsible for receiving and responding to comments or complaints about the Ombuds Office, and for ensuring that persons who feel unfairly treated by the Office of the Ombuds, have recourse.

MARGARET T. GETMAN & WILLIAM J. VILLA SERVICE TO STUDENT AWARDS

The Goodspeed intern emcees this award ceremony, which takes place at the end of the spring quarter, and serves as co-chair of the committee that selects the award recipients. The awards go to staff, faculty and departments that have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to the overall growth and development of students and to the quality of student life. Working closely with a student affairs manager appointed by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the intern carries out a number of duties in support of the award process.

SELF-INITIATED PROJECTS

The intern may undertake a variety of self-initiated projects that reflect his or her own interests and allow for a personalized experience each year. These projects may range from detailed to broad efforts, and design and implementation are the intern’s responsibility. The intern must propose all project ideas and budget with the Senior Analyst and the Vice Chancellor and submit a budget outline for approval before beginning implementation.

INTERN SELECTION

The Intern coordinates the selection of the Goodspeed Internship for the following academic year.
