Key Programs and Services
  • Campus Learning Assistance Services (CLAS) helps students increase their mastery of course material through course-specific tutoring and academic skills development. CLAS is staffed by tutor coordinators, learning skills counselors, instructors, and over 200 graduate and undergraduate tutors and peers.

  • Individual and group tutorials are available for a wide range of undergraduate courses. We offer instructional groups in MCDB 4 & 130, Chem 1, 25, 107 & 108, ECE 2, Econ 1 & 2, Math 3, 5, 15 & 34, ME 14, PSTAT 5, Physics 1, 2, 3, 4 & 6, Psych 5 & 7, and Zoo 25. In addition, drop-in tutoring is available for Math & Physical Science courses, Statistics, Economics, Accounting & Logic (SEAL), and most first-year foreign language courses.

  • Students seeking individual assistance with any writing assignment or project can sign up in advance for an appointment in the Writing Lab or use the Writing Drop-in Lab on a first-come, first-served basis. Tutors in both labs assist students at any stage in the writing process-from analyzing the assignment to revising for clarity and conciseness. However, CLAS tutors do not proofread or edit student papers. Students for whom English is a second language can use the ESL Drop-in Lab to receive individual assistance in identifying and resolving problems with grammar, idioms, syntax, and organization.

  • In our study skills workshops, students learn strategies for improving academic performance and increasing comprehension of course materials. Our most popular workshops include Organizing Your Time, Top 10 Reading Strategies, Making Your Way through the System, and Taking Essay Exams. Quarterly offerings include a wide range of topics and meeting times to accommodate student needs.

  • What Students Use CLAS? All group tutorials, workshops, and drop-in services are free to registered UCSB students. Individual tutoring is available to students referred to CLAS by DSP (the Disabled Students Program) or by Intercollegiate Athletics. Students who would like to hire a private tutor can receive referrals through our offices. Last year 7000 students used CLAS services.
Faculty Involvement Opportunity
CLAS is committed to working collaboratively with faculty to sustain a rich academic support environment for all UCSB undergraduates. In addition to working closely with faculty in the selection and training of tutors, CLAS often collaborates with faculty and Teaching Assistants to offer applied workshops tailored to the demands of specific course requirements such as term papers and essay exams. For example, a History 4A paper preparation workshop might address:
  1. choosing and narrowing a topic,
  2. accessing library resources, and
  3. incorporating evidence.
