- Purpose: Students for a Progressive Asian
American Movement* (SPAAM) Directives
1. Creating and facilitating a
space for Asian Pacific Islander
Americans to organize on our
community issues and turn it into
effective action.
2. Empowering the Asian Pacific
Islander* community with the
distinct understanding that we are
the ones that define our identity.
Although lumped into the broad
construct of “Asian Pacific
Islander” we recognize that there
are numerous difference in the
Asian Pacific Islander diaspora,
and shall work to interconnect the
vast range of issues our individual
communities face.
3. Using culture as a means of
self-preservation is not enough. We
need to continually critique and
challenge, not only the political
identity, but the political
environment of the Asian Pacific
Islander community. Culture like
politics is dynamic, always
changing never static. Hence, we
choose politics as our platform as
opposed to culture.
*SPAAM: To clarify, the API
identity was born out of the Asian
American movement, hence the
relationship between the name of
SPAAM and its directives are not
contradictory.
*Asian Pacific Islander: We choose
to use this identity as opposed to
Asian American, because we are
trying to make conscious efforts to
be as inclusive as possible. And
because the term “Asian American”
does not address the complexities
of having been historically
categorized as the racialized other.
