Preparing for the FSSP Orientation on August 1-2

The Orientation on August 1-2 is for Freshman Summer Start Program participants and their parents only. If you have been admitted to the Freshman Summer Start Program, be sure to reserve your space in the FSSP Orientation by submitting the online Freshman Reservation Form. Please read the following information to prepare for the FSSP Orientation session.

Move-In on Thursday, July 31

Details about Thursday, July 31 move-in times and location will be sent to you from Housing & Residential Services and Summer Sessions. Look for this information which will be mailed to you in late June or July.

What to Bring for Orientation

Students:

  • Money for Access Student ID card ($15) and for student night out ($5)
  • Copies of transcripts from previous college level courses

Parents:

  • Money for parking ($8 per weekday and $3 per weekend day; parking fees are subject to change)
  • Casual, comfortable clothes; walking shoes; jacket for evening
  • Pen and paper for taking notes
  • For those who are staying overnight in an on-campus residence hall - alarm clock; personal toiletries; bathrobe (restrooms are not adjoined to bedrooms)

Placement Exams

See the Placement Exams section of this website to determine whether you need to take any placement exams. Not all students will need to take the exams. Language placement exams in French, Spanish, and German are administered at Orientation. Please bring a #2 pencil and ID to take the language exam. The Calculus Placement Test is available online. If you need to take the Calculus Test, please complete it online before coming to Orientation in order to register for a math class at Orientation. See Placement Exams on the Freshman Orientation section of this website for further information.

Previous Math Courses

If you are transferring college credit in mathematics, bring an unofficial copy of the transcript showing your college level work to Orientation OR mail, fax (805-893-2385), or e-mail your transcript and UCSB perm number to the Math Department. For questions, e-mail: sheryl@math.ucsb.edu.

Program Notes & Meals

Following Thursday afternoon move-in, the session begins with dinner on Thursday, July 31 and includes six meals. Vegetarian dishes are offered at each meal. Refunds cannot be given for missed meals. On Friday and Saturday, the session will follow the
2-day Orientation schedule. See the Program Overview for Freshman Students and Program Overview for Freshman Parents. The Parent Orientation concludes on Saturday afternoon.
