Preparing to Register for Classes
Your Orientation Academic Advisor will explain UCSB requirements, and help you select
and register for your fall courses. Before you can register, you may need to take
some important steps. Read the information in this section and make the appropriate
preparations so that course registration at Orientation will be as smooth as possible.
Math Placement
If you are transferring college credit in mathematics, please bring an extra unofficial
copy of the transcript showing your college level work to Orientation. Consult the
UCSB General Catalog and the Math Department website for details on course placement.
The
Calculus Placement Test is available online at http://hw.math.ucsb.edu/placementtest/.
The exam is required before enrollment in Math 15 (pre-calculus) and Math 3A. Math
3A is a requirement for certain majors. Students who have a confirmed score of 2
or higher on the Advanced Placement Calculus AB or BC exam may register for calculus
courses without taking the exam. If you need to take the Calculus Placement Test,
complete it online before coming to Orientation in order to register for a math
class at Orientation. For questions, e-mail: sheryl@math.ucsb.edu.
Foreign Language Placement
If you are transferring college credit in a foreign language, you do not need to
take a placement exam. Students who are not transferring credit in a foreign language,
but have a background in that language and want to study it at UCSB, may take a
placement exam. Language placement exams are not offered during Transfer Orientation,
but they are offered at the start of each academic quarter. Contact the department
for the language placement exam schedule. Students who are native speakers of a
foreign language must contact the department before attending Orientation if planning
to register for language courses in the fall. French & Italian: 805-893-3111; Spanish:
