Preparing to Register for Classes
Academic advising at Orientation will help you learn about course selection and graduation
requirements. Before you can register, you may need to take some important steps. Read the
information in this section and make the appropriate preparations so that course registration
after the conclusion of Orientation will be as smooth as possible.
Previous College Level Courses
Transfer credit is assigned and entered into the UCSB computer system when the
Office of Admissions has received all of your official transcripts and test scores.
Official transcripts and test scores are due to the UCSB Office of Admissions by
July 15, 2009. This information might not be entered into the system by the time
of your Orientation session. Therefore, you must bring a few copies of your
unofficial transcripts to Orientation. The advisor in your major will need these
transcripts to assess your progress in the major, to clear prerequisites you may
have satisfied with transfer work, and to advise you on fall quarter course selection.
If you have taken courses at a college or university other than a California community college
or another UC campus, they are not automatically entered into the UCSB computer system.
In addition to bringing copies of transcripts, please send or fax a copy of your unofficial
transcripts to your major department prior to Orientation. Department mailing addresses and fax numbers
can be found on the UCSB website at
www.ucsb.edu.
IGETC
The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a program of
courses accepted in lieu of the UCSB general education program. Normally, it must
be completed prior to transfer. You must have your community college send IGETC
certification and your final transcripts to the UCSB Admissions Office. Please consult
your community college counselor before your Orientation session to determine whether
you have completed IGETC.
All students who have not completed IGETC are required
to attend Academic Advising at 3:30pm during Orientation.
