Preparing to Register for Classes

Your Orientation Academic Advisor will explain UCSB requirements, and help you select and register for your fall courses. Before you can register, you may need to take some important steps. Read the information in this section and make the appropriate preparations so that course registration at Orientation will be as smooth as possible.

Calculus Placement Test

The Calculus Placement Test is not a requirement for all students at UCSB. However, for certain majors the exam is necessary to place you in a math class. To take the Calculus Placement Test go to http://hw.math.ucsb.edu/placementtest/ where it is available online.

See the chart below to determine whether you need to take the exam. If so, complete the exam online before coming to Orientation in order to register for a math class at Orientation.

Foreign Language Placement Exams

Foreign language is a requirement in the College of Letters and Science. However, any one of the following criteria will fulfill this requirement. If any one of the following apply to you, you do not need to take a foreign language placement exam.

  • An average of "C" or better in 3rd year level of high school foreign language
  • SAT II Subject Test score of 570 in German, Spanish, or Italian; 590 in French
  • Score of 3 or above on any Advanced Placement foreign language exam

If you have not fulfilled the language requirement by any of the criteria above, or if you want to continue your study in a foreign language, you can take a foreign language placement exam. French, Spanish, and German exams are offered at Orientation. The placement exam is required for French and recommended for Spanish and German. For other languages, contact the department for exams offered at the beginning of fall quarter. An Advanced Placement Test score in foreign language can be used for placement.

If you are transferring college credit in a foreign language or you are a native speaker of a foreign language, you must contact the department before attending Orientation if planning to register for language courses in the fall.
