The Leadership Certificate Program (LCP) is designed to develop awareness, understanding, and value of various leadership methods. The program:

  • introduces students to prominent theories and concepts of leadership
  • enhances student leadership skills
  • develops awareness of major social issues confronting our global community and leaders
  • enhances academic experience without impeding regular progress toward degree
  • acknowledges the involvement and dedication of student leaders.

Here's what students are saying about the Leadership Certificate Program (LCP):

"I think doing the LCP was a really good opportunity to truly think about how my leadership style affects other people. As someone who’s almost always been in a leadership position, I sometimes forget to view a situation from a member’s perspective or from a theoretical standpoint. The LCP leadership classes and workshops motivated me to use other leaders’ styles as well as strategies to effectively lead an organization."
Woojean Chung

"Looking back I found that my deepest rewards from the program actually stemmed from my experiences while completing the requirements. Yes, it does look good on my resume, but what really means a lot to me is all the memories I have of my development as a leader and as a person."
Carolyn Freeman

"I know that the LCP looks good for graduate school admissions and future employment because it shows that you don’t just have an undergrad diploma. It is one more thing that helps you stand out, or one more thing that may get you a job and then also enable you to move up in that job. With the LCP, you gain communication, critical thinking, and networking skills that are an asset to any establishment you are involved with."
Michael Jonas

The LCP has four distinct components: academic coursework, educational workshops, leadership experience, and written reflection. LCP members work at their own pace to complete the program's requirements.

Coursework Requirement
The successful completion of six (6) academic courses is required (five (5) for engineering students). Successful completion is defined as passing a course with a grade of “C” or better, or a “Passed” when graded on a P/NP basis. Courses that fulfill this requirement are separated into 4 categories (Leadership Education, Gender-Related, Culture/Ethnicity-Related, and Leadership/Organization-Related). A course will count toward the fulfillment of only one LCP category, but may also be used to fulfill other general education, university, and major requirements (see your college). All courses listed on the LCP website are pre-approved and DO NOT require a petition.

Students may petition to the LCP Coordinator to accept any course (either from UCSB or another institution) in lieu of one of those listed by using the Course Petition Form. Transfer courses that are equivalent to those listed will be accepted upon submission of a transcript and a Course Petition Form for each course. Upon approval or denial of a petition, the participant’s online record will be updated and he or she will receive a confirmation email from the Coordinator.

Educational Workshops
Participants must attend five (5) educational workshops some time during participation in the program to gain additional skills and information. These workshops are to be chosen by the participant but must be related to leadership in some way (e.g., issues related to current culture/gender/global change, time management skills, leadership theories, supervision skills, communication skills, group dynamics, event planning, budget management, etc.). All workshops are subject to approval for credit by the LCP Coordinator.

The participant must always obtain the workshop coordinator’s signature on the Workshop Completion Form and submit the completed form to the LCP Coordinator in the Office of Student Life (2260 SRB). Upon approval or denial of credit for a workshop, the participant’s online record will be updated and he or she will receive a confirmation email from the Coordinator.

The Office of Student Life hosts a range of leadership workshops every year: quarterly workshops, the Annual Student Leader Retreat (Fall), the Annual Student Leadership Conference (Winter), the Leadership Challenge® at UCSB (Winter), the Leadership Education & Access Program (Winter/Spring), and more.

Experiential Requirement
Participants are required to serve in a leadership role or roles for a minimum of three (3) quarters or nine (9) months. The leadership role must be held during the college years (not high school) but can be within or outside the campus community. A leadership role is one where your words and actions significantly influence the experience of another person or group of people. It may or may not have a formal title or position associated with it.

Some examples include: peer advisor, resident assistant, officer in a campus organization or Greek chapter, serving in student government or RHA, serving as a tutor or coach, working as a manager or supervisor, chairing a committee, coordinating a large event, etc.

In order to complete the LCP, your leadership role/s must be verified in writing by your supervisor(s) or advisor(s). You may submit the Leadership Role Confirmation Form at any time.

Written Requirement
As a final requirement, participants must write and submit an 8-10 page paper (double-spaced) on the topic, “What is Leadership?” The paper should be grounded in readings and knowledge gleaned from the courses and workshops taken for the LCP as well as the participant’s personal experiences with leadership over the course of his or her participation in the Leadership Certificate Program.

The paper demonstrates what the student understands about leadership and should include an exploration of his or her development as a leader. It will be graded on a P/NP basis and must include a bibliography.
