If a UCSB student is arrested or cited for an alcohol or other drug offense in Isla Vista, that student will receive a letter of concern from the campus with referral to sources of assistance. Approximately one week later a letter of concern containing notification of the student’s citation or arrest will be mailed to the student’s parents or guardians with an enclosure containing suggestions on how to address the issue with their student. Campus officials will not mail a letter of concern to the parents or guardians of students arrested or cited for alcohol or drug use in cases where a student receives medical treatment in conjunction with the arrest or citation, provided this treatment is indicated in the review of public records.
Letters issued under parental notification do not constitute a disciplinary action by the campus nor do they become part of a student’s disciplinary record at UCSB.
The goal of parental notification at UCSB is to enlist parental support for fostering more appropriate student behavior to create a safer community environment and reduce the many negative impacts of substance abuse.
Parents are encouraged to contact our office when needing general assistance. Sometimes you may feel like you have exhausted every source of help and at other times you may not even know where to begin. In situations where there is a breakdown in the successful completion of an administrative process, such as complicated paperwork or withdrawals; we will explore options with the student or parents to facilitate a satisfactory resolution. Our staff is dedicated to improving the overall quality of life for our students by helping them overcome some of the frustrations they may encounter.
