Money Matters

During college, students are independently responsible for their own finances, including pursuing financial assistance, monitoring billing statements and accounts, and determining whether or not they should take on a part-time job.

Each student and family has their own unique financial situation. UCSB provides many services to students regardless of their situation to help students manage their finances so they can focus on academics without financial worries. Parents are strongly encouraged to talk with their students about finances, credit cards, and spending habits before they arrive on campus.

Emergency Funding for Students

Students experiencing financial hardship may apply for emergency grants and loans through a number of on-campus programs. These emergency funds and other campus financial resources are outlined in the UCSB "Money Matters" guide.

Associated Students, in conjunction with the Educational Opportunity Program and the Office of Student Life, administer the emergency loan programs. Grant funds are also available in extreme cases. More information can be obtained by contacting the Office of Student Life at (805) 893-4569.

Additionally, students with emergency medical or dental expenses not covered by insurance may apply for grant funds to cover the cost of treatment. Funds are available through the Student Medical Emergency Relief Fund (SMERF). More information can be obtained by contacting the SMERF Account Manager at (805) 893-3253.
