Student Health Services

One of the most frequently asked questions by parents when their son or daughter leaves for college is “When they get sick, who will take care of them?” The answer is easy – Student Health.

Student Health is a large medical facility, fully compliant with standards of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, employing over 140 professionals and support staff including: primary care physicians, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, orthopedists, physician assistants, dermatologists, optometrists, dentists, dietitians, physical therapists, pharmacists, lab technicians, medical assistants, and x-ray technicians. A student can make an appointment or may be seen in the Urgent Care. Students can either email or drop-in to talk with an Advice Nurse. Electronic medical records are utilized, allowing online appointments, pharmacy refills, and secure communication via email. Please email studenthealth@sa.ucsb.edu or see http://studenthealth.sa.ucsb.edu for further information. If students have questions about their health needs, they can call (805) 893-3371 or visit Student Health to talk with a nurse advisor without making an appointment.

Where To Go When Students Get Sick

Student Health is located on the west end of campus, halfway between the Residence Halls and Isla Vista. All registered students are able to utilize services every weekday as follows: Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Wednesday from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Thursday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m., 5 p.m.–7 p.m. by appointment only. In the event of an emergency or after hours, local Urgent Care Centers and the Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital are available. Further information is available on the Student Health website (http://studenthealth.sa.ucsb.edu). If students are unable to get to Student Health, they can call the campus ambulance (9-911 from campus telephones) or Yellow Cab Company. The charge will be billed to the student’s BARC account.

Scheduling Appointments

To make the best use of a student’s time, we recommend making an appointment for visits whenever possible. For an urgent medical problem that needs immediate attention and cannot wait for an appointment, we have “Urgent Care” available. Understandably, students may need to wait to see a clinician since this clinic operates NOT on a first come first served basis, but in order of the severity of the medical problem.

There are 3 ways to make an appointment:
1. Schedule appointments online
2. Call (805) 893-3371 and speak with a receptionist

3. Come in to Student Health and make an appointment at the Appointment Desk in the lobby

Once you make an appointment: Arrive 10-15 minutes early in case there is paperwork to fill out. Check-in Medical Assistant will take vital signs such as blood pressure and temperature. A doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant will examine the student. Patients may be instructed to go to the lab or x-ray for testing, physical therapy to make an appointment, or the pharmacy for medication.

Patients must come to the computer check-in stations in the main lobby, the Granada waiting room or Embarcadero Hall 15 MINUTES before their scheduled appointment time. If students are 5 or more minutes late for their appointment, it may need to be rescheduled.

Urgent Care and What to Expect
If students have an urgent problem and need to be seen immediately:
  • Go to the Appointment Desk in the lobby, where eligibility for services will be verified. Students will be scheduled into an appointment for the same day if one is available. If no appointments are available, students will be given an “Urgent Care” pass. In Urgent Care, present the pass and check in.
  • At that time, medical needs will be assessed. Waiting time will vary depending on the severity of the problem.
Canceling an Appointment

There is a $55.00 missed appointment fee for no-shows.

REGULAR OFFICE VISITS must be cancelled at least 4 hours in advance to avoid a $25 late cancellation fee.

PHYSICAL THERAPY, OPTOMETRY, DENTAL, IUD placement and removal, NEXPLANON placement and removal, and MINOR SURGERY appointments must be cancelled 24 hours in advance to avoid the late cancellation fee.
