Health Insurance

The University of California requires all students to have health insurance covering injuries and illnesses beyond the scope of Student Health or that occur when Student Health is closed. UCSB sponsors the UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP), which provides a complete health care package for students when combined with Student Health medical care. UC SHIP covers students year round, including the summer months, regardless of whether or not the student is enrolled in classes.

Students are automatically enrolled in UC SHIP unless they submit a waiver form by the designated date. Students must demonstrate that their private health insurance is comparable to UC SHIP and that they will have sufficient insurance coverage during their time at UCSB. Submission of the waiver is not a guarantee that Student Health representatives will determine a student’s private health insurance to be sufficient coverage. A new UC SHIP waiver must completed by the student each year.

What is UC SHIP?

UC SHIP is an affordable health insurance plan tailored to the health care needs of UCSB students. The medical plan features year-round, worldwide coverage using the Anthem Blue Cross network, and includes prepaid access to care at the UCSB Student Health Center for illness or injury. To directly access the UC SHIP website please see http://ucop.edu/ucship. UC SHIP is a comprehensive insurance plan which has Medical, Vision, Dental, and Pharmacy.
