The Role of Counseling
&
Psychological Services

Counseling & Psychological Services

Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) offers a variety of mental health services including crisis intervention, psychological assessment, individual therapy, group counseling, and referrals to campus and community resources. We also have a Mental Health Peer Program in which students can drop-in to meet with a fellow student trained in peer counseling to help address concerns related to stress management and adjustment to college, use the massage chairs and Egg Chair, pick up literature about a wide range of concerns, or attend an individualized Test Anxiety Program.

Eligibility

All registered students are eligible for services. When help is needed in sorting out a personal concern, CAPS is a resource for learning new skills in building self-confidence, being more assertive, relating to others, reducing stress, solving problems, and identifying options. Counseling can be particularly useful if academic difficulty is related to the personal distress.

Confidentiality

Meetings with a psychologist or other professional staff member are treated confidentially at CAPS. Information about counseling sessions will not be released to anyone without the student's written consent. Exceptions to confidentiality that are required by law include child abuse reporting, prevention of harm to self and/or others, and if records are legitimately subpoenaed by the court. Otherwise, CAPS clinicians take confidentiality very seriously and protect student's right to privacy.

Appointments and Consultation

CAPS is located in the Counseling and Career Services building 599 across from Storke Tower. Students can schedule an appointment in person Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or by calling (805) 893-4411. If immediate assistance is needed during the day, it is important that the situation be identified as urgent or as an emergency as in these cases arrangements can be made for a student to be seen immediately. Faculty, staff, or students who are concerned about a student or desire assistance in making a referral are encouraged to contact CAPS at (805) 893-4411 to speak with a psychologist for guidance in this process. Consultation is also available evenings, weekends, and holidays by
calling (805) 893-4411.

If you feel unsafe and/or a situation requires immediate attention, call Campus Police (911 or 805-893-3446). The campus police force provides UCSB with 24-hour emergency response services for medical, psychiatric, and safety concerns.
