David Bohnett CyberCenter

The UCSB Resource Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity is very pleased to announce the Grand Opening of the David Bohnett CyberCenter in May, 2005. Housed in the Rainbow Lounge, the CyberCenter was made possible by a grant from the David Bohnett Foundation for almost $14,000. We are very grateful to the Foundation for their generous support!

CyberCenter Grand Opening
“Ribbon-Cutting” May 2005

Student interns Rudy Lopez and Tanya Danel cut the ceremonial ribbon.
The David Bohnet CyberCenter at UCSB includes three state-of-the-art IBM computers, a laser printer, and scanner. The CyberCenter will provide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) students and their allies with comfortable and contemporary computer workstations. All are located in the Rainbow Lounge’s safe space, which will encourage student use of targeted resources such as online journals devoted to LGBTQI issues and links to community organizing and advocacy information. These new workstations will help Paul Moore of the David Bohnett Foundationimprove the campus climate for LGBTQI students—a climate that national research confirms can be antagonistic to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students.

Michael Young, UCSB Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The David Bohnett Foundation is a grant-making organization with a $30-million endowment dedicated to improving society through social activism. The Foundation makes grants to national organizations that focus their efforts in Southern California and to local gay and lesbian centers across the country, for the creation and support of David Bohnett CyberCenters.

In 1994, David Bohnett founded GeoCities, a successful Internet-based media and e-commerce company acquired by Yahoo! in 1999. In the course of his career, Bohnett became keenly aware of what the Internet can contribute toward facilitating change. He has made it the mission of the foundation established in his name to ensure that the LGBT community is well positioned to leverage the transformative power of the Web.
