Admissions and Outreach Services

Interns provide general office support to include (when applicable): assisting guests, answering phones, data entry, scanning forms, leading campus tours, and advising visitors about the UCSB student experience as well as admissions and other university information. Interns are trained in a variety of areas that address the concerns of prospective students and their families as well as support the implementation of departmental activities, events and programs. Interns must develop strong communication, organizational, and technical skills over the course of the internship in order to effectively promote the academic quality and experiential diversity of the campus.

    Job Description: Careful attention to detail while maintaining a high level of productivity, reliability, good work ethic, confidentiality, good communication skills. Detailed data entry and auditing of incoming transfer work from other institutions; the goal is to have all transfer work online to increase accessibility, reduce physical paperwork, and be usable by Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS).     Job Position: Transfer Services Intern

    Job Description: Support the function and goals of the Transfer Services unit within the Office of Admissions and serve as a mentor for Transfer: Making It Happen (TMIH) participants at local high schools by helping students fill out applications for college admission and scholarships as well as provide general programmatic assistance (paperwork, data entry, etc.).

Arts and Lectures

Each year Arts & Lectures hires about 50 students to assist us in presenting more than 200 films, lectures and performances by world-class artists. Positions require Work-Study.

    Job Position: House Management Team

    Job Description: Direct student and volunteer teams in house management at events, including overseeing merchandise and concession sales. Hire, train and supervise the ushers, and assign work schedules. Assist with other duties related to events as needed.     Job Description: Sell tickets for events presented by UCSB Arts & Lectures and other departments. Cashiering and customer service experience are preferred. Qualities that are essential include excellent verbal communication skills, dependability, ability to work successfully with the public, and accurate handling of money and tickets. Must be able to balance and reconcile ticket reports after being trained. Computer experience and a commitment to the job are a must. Applicants for office work on weekdays must be available for three two-hour shifts per week. Ticket Office assistants who work at evening performances wear appropriate evening attire.     Job Description: Serve as the face of Arts & Lectures at events on and off-campus. Take tickets and seat patrons for performances, films and lectures. Set up lobby displays and merchandise sales. Must become knowledgeable about Arts & Lectures programs, be able to communicate effectively and courteously with people from all backgrounds, be able to think on your feet. Neat appearance and dependability are essential. Provide own work clothes: black pants or skirt and a white shirt with collar. Associated Students

Associated Students employs over 200 students in a wide variety of positions to support the work of the professional staff, provide the continuity needed for the organization to function and empower student leaders to create change. Campus Learning Assistance Services

Campus Learning Assistance Services (CLAS) helps students increase their mastery of course material through course-specific group instruction, academic skills development and writing assistance services. Instructors and student tutors hold instructional groups in Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Engineering, Math and Physics. Drop-in centers are available in the previous subjects as well as in Writing, and Foreign Languages. In addition, CLAS offers study skills consultations and academic skills workshops.

    Job Position: Academic Skills Tutors

    Job Description: Academic Skills Tutors assess students' academic needs and conduct workshops in time management, note taking, reading, test taking and study strategies. Must have an interest in teaching and demonstrate an ability to explain effective study strategies.

    Job Description: Intake Assistants greet incoming students in the CLAS reception areas, answer questions about services, enroll students in CLAS programs, and assist in light clerical duties.     Job Position: Tutor

    Job Description: Tutors assist students in understanding course concepts, discovering solutions to problems, developing methods for independent work, and preparing for exams. Tutors are needed in math, science, economics, engineering, foreign language, writing, and ESL. Tutors must have junior standing, 3.0 GPA overall, and recommendation from faculty in appropriate discipline.

    Job Description: Career Peers are employed for 10 hours per week and need to commit for the entire academic year. They also need to be available for training the week before classes begin in Fall Quarter. Responsibilities include: * Actively develop a working knowledge of agency and campus referral sources in the areas of career exploration, internship, job search and graduate school. * Advise students in their initial stages of career planning and provide appropriate referrals to advisors, counselors, or other campus agencies as needed. * Conduct research for career library including revision and organization of current materials. * Recommend students to appropriate occupational binders, handouts, resource materials and computer programs relevant to their needs. * Assist students with GauchoLink registration and internet searches for part-time, internship and career employment options. * Troubleshoot questions when applying for positions through the Campus Interview Program * Conduct formal/informal group presentations to students, faculty and staff about Career Services. * Assist career counselors with program development and implementation of specialty areas. * Participate in recruitment, hiring, and training of new Career Peer Advisors. * Provide tours of Career Resource Room as requested. * Other duties as assigned.

Counseling Center

Stress management peer advisors work in the Stress Management Peer Office of Counseling Services. We help students of all ages learn new strategies for coping with stress. We provide one-on-one support as well as larger workshops and presentations to help students be successful both personally and academically.

    Job Description: Stress Management Peer Advisors work in the Stress Management Program Office (SMPO) of Counseling Services. They provide students with support, basic stress management techniques and peer advising on stress related issues and concerns. Resources within the SMPO include articles on stress management and other related topics, and audio/video tapes. These tapes are used in one of our relaxation rooms wich contain either a Shiatzu Massage Lounger or an Alpha-Wave Chamber which is commonly called the "Egg-Chair."

Disabled Students Program

The Disabled Students Program (DSP) works to: * Increase the retention and graduation rates of students with temporary and permanent disabilities * Assure equal access to all educational and academic programs * Foster student independence * Acts as a resource for faculty and staff * Acts as a campus liaison regarding issues and regulations that are related to UCSB's disabled student population

    Job Position: Note takers

    Job Description: Responsibilities include: attending class regularly, keeping legible, clearly stated and accurate notes, noting salient points, defining abbreviations, omiting personal opinions from notes, providing notes within 24 hours following each class, communicating clearly with DSP student and identifying a substitute if absent. Must maintain confidentiality at all times. Note takers attend an orientation and training upon hire and receive a stipend of $100 per class. Note takers are responsible to proctor one mid-term and one final each quarter.

    Job Description: Provide clerical and administrative support to DSP career staff. Responsibilities include replenishing supplies, filing, word processing, and data input.     Job Position: Test Proctors (Active, Non-active)
    Position Contact:
    Job Description: Responsibilities include picking up and returning exams to instructors, proctoring DSP students during exams. Active proctors read the exam to the student or act as a scribe writing the answers the student vocalizes. Must maintain confidentiality at all times. Non-active proctors accompany students to a test site and proctor them during the time frame set aside for the exam. They must maintain confidentiality at all times. All proctors must attend an orientation and receive training upon hire. Pay range is $8 - $10/hour.

Early Academic Outreach

Interns are crucial in coordinating Academic Tours for partnership schools (high school and junior high school), conduct student and parent presentation as well as assist in data processing and with operational processes. MS and HS outreach and Interns help our department to increase the number of students qualified to enter a four year college following HS graduation.

Educational Opportunity Program

The student staff play an integral role as the campus outreach arm of EOP by extending the programs and services to the student community where they live and study. The Student staff direct students our offices and cultural resource centers. The student staff serve as a source of information, support and assist with the implementation of programs and various services offered by EOP.

    Job Description: An office assistant is the first contact person you will meet at EOP.     Job Description: EOP Student Mentors provide outreach and onsite support to EOP frosh, transfer/re-entry and continuing students, developing learning experiences to support students academically, socially, personally, and culturally, in an effort to establish a nurturing support network and assist in their transition to UCSB. Student Mentors will implement informational and motivational programs, targeting strategies for successful undergraduate academics and graduate admission. Each Student Mentor will serve as a liaison for one of following EOP Programs & or Services: an assigned resident hall, or Cultural Resource Center (African diasporic, American Indian, Asian, Chican@/Latin@ and Middle Eastern). Student Mentors will work in tandem with professional staff to develop and implement academically centered activities and events that will involve the entire Student Mentor team. Student Mentors are responsible for promoting EOP, marketing activities, connecting students with EOP counselors, and serving as a referral agent to relevant campus services.

    Job Description: Peer Advisors develop a high level of communication and visibility with students in order to facilitate the transition to the college experience. EOP services during FSSP are designed to support the first year student academically, socially, personally, and culturally, while helping to establish a nurturing learning support network in the residence hall and in the larger UCSB community. Peer Advisors are responsible to market EOP and other campus departments, and actively connect students with their EOP counselors and UCSB community in general. Additionally, the Peer Advisors will plan programs, collaborate with the EOP Professional Staff in the implementation of cultural or social events as requested and represent EOP at FSSP events.

    Job Description: STEP Team Leaders coordinate the efforts of the STEP RA team and report to the Resident Directors.     Job Description: STEP Resident Assistants (RA) assist incoming frosh in their transition to university life through a two-week academic bridge program. Under the direction of the STEP Resident Directors and STEP Team Leaders, the RA works on a daily basis with students, individually and in groups, to provide support, information and the necessary structure to maintain a large group living environment. Each RA is assigned a floor and works collectively with other RAs and Team Leaders to create a harmonious climate within the residence hall. RAs also serve as a liaison to refer students in need of counseling, medical care, or advising to STEP Staff. The STEP RA is part of a larger team and is responsible for the implementation of social, developmental, cultural and recreational programs. In addition, they also enforce STEP policies and inform the Resident Directors of any violations. STEP is a residential program; residential staff is required to live in the residence halls and is on-call 24 hours a day (except on day off). Number of positions to be determined.

    Job Position: Financial Aid Peer Adviser

    Job Description: Peer Advisers serve as a source of information and support to students and their families. They are responsible for providing assistance over the phone and in person at our front desk. This position includes the opportunity to gain customer service skills, knowledge in various financial aid programs, and working in an office environment and team setting. Graduate Students Association

The GSA is the elected representative government for graduate and professional students at UCSB. We work to ensure that graduate student concerns are addressed in on- and off-campus policy decisions. We also provide graduate students with information concerning decisions that are relevant to graduate student life and organize graduate social events.

MultiCultural Center

The MultiCultural Center's mission is to provide a safe space, to facilitate the recruitment and retention of students of color, international students and gay, lesbian and bisexual students, and to combat institutional racism and ethnocentrism.     Job Description: The MCC student assistants are highly involved with the presentation of MCC events by helping with off and on-campus mailing, flyer distribution, class announcements, the setting up of the physical space and operation of the sound booth. They also assist in all other events presented by UCSB student organizations and departments. MCC student assistants work hard to fullfil and promote the MCC's mission and commitment toward its constituents by becoming the Center's spokespeople.

Office of Judicial Affairs

The Office of Judicial Affairs strives to create a safe and intellectually challenging setting for UCSB students to live and learn, and to maintain an environment conducive to UCSB's principles of "Scholarship, Leadership, and Citizenship." We do this by: publishing and enforcing the UCSB Campus Regulations, administering the campus judicial process, serving as the main reporting point for hate crimes and incidents, educating the campus community about academic integrity and responsible conduct, and providing information and assistance to students regarding student rights and grievance procedures.

    Job Description: As they attend to the front desk, these students are many times the first impression they have of the Office of Student Life.
