I Want A Truce Campaign
The“I Want a Truce” campaign is inspired from a speech by Andrea Dworkin
made in 1983, entitled, “I Want a 24-hour Truce In Which There Is No Rape.” She
likens rape and sexual assault to a war against women, and she demands that there
be at least one day where women are not forced to live in fear of being beaten or
raped. She demanded a 24-hour truce in which there is no rape. The students involved
in UCSB’s Rape Prevention Education Program are expanding on her idea and asking
for a sexual assault-free weekend in our community.

The “I Want a Truce” campaign is an annual event at UCSB, usually in
October. T-shirts, posters, flyers, and flags are distributed on campus and programs
are put on to raise awareness about the constant threat of rape and sexual assault
that college women face. In order to receive a T-shirt, people are asked to sign
a pledge saying that they will not sexually assault anyone or participate in rape
culture.
It Affects Me Campaign
The goal of the It Affects Me is to make our student community aware of the fact
that we are all affected by rape and sexual assault, directly or indirectly.
We are working to teach the community how to take action to end the epidemic of
sexual assault.
During a week in April, bright blue t-shirts are passed out stating “It Affects
Me,” along with flyers. These flyers explain how we are all affected by rape and
sexual assault and what can be done to help stop it. It is our hope that the t-shirts
will ignite a dialogue among students that will help to raise awareness and create
a springboard for change.
This week-long event is also hosted along with a variety of other student groups
on campus, and coincides with other campaigns held during the month of April. Movies,
discussions, performances, and more are held during this time to increase sexual
assault awareness.
