What’s the difference between the Women’s Center and Feminist Studies?

The Feminist Studies department is an academic unit with amazing faculty who do interdisciplinary research and teaching on a wide variety of feminist topics. They offer academic courses and have a major, minor, and a graduate program. The Women’s Center, on the other hand, offers co-curricular educational programs, as well as other services to support the lives of students outside the classroom. While Feminist Studies and the Women’s Center are distinct entities, we share many of the same concerns and often work collaboratively.

Do men come to the Women’s Center?

Yes! All our programs and services are open to men. They attend our educational programs, are involved in our anti-violence campaigns, and find support and resources for redefining manhood and engaging in social change.

Is the Women’s Center only for feminists?

We understand feminism to be part of a broad movement for social justice that supports the equality and dignity of all people. Beyond this, there are many perspectives on what feminism is or who counts as a feminist. We welcome differing perspectives and seek to provide a space where anyone, whether or not they identify with this term, can explore issues of gender and social justice.

Does the Women’s Center serve graduate students?

Yes! The Women’s Center is part of the Graduate Student Support Network (GSSN). In addition to our general programs and services, we offer specialized programs to meet the distinct needs of graduate students. For example, we offer programs on the non-academic job market and provide opportunities for graduate scholars to present their work. If you’re a teaching assistant, you’ll find that our co-curricular programs can enhance your students’ classroom experience. Last but not least, we provide grad students with a safe place to talk about the challenges of graduate student life with staff who’ve been through the process.
